Understanding Middle States

Accreditation as accountability and continuous improvement

MSA-CESS accreditation is designed to affirm that a school provides the quality of educational programmes, services and resources expected by its stakeholders and recognised within the wider educational community.

Schools conduct a comprehensive self-study against prescribed accreditation standards before participating in professional peer review.

The process does not end when accreditation is awarded. Member schools remain responsible for continuous improvement and planning throughout the accreditation term.

Standards for Accreditation

Five standards for schools and school systems

The current School Edition standards introduced by MSA-CESS streamline accreditation around five areas relevant to institutional quality and everyday school operations.

Self-study protocols

Different pathways for different stages of school development

MSA-CESS does not require every school to use the same self-study route. Schools work with Middle States to determine the protocol most appropriate to their accreditation history and organisational context.

DOFSelf-Study Protocol

Designing Our Future

A traditional self-study and accreditation protocol primarily recommended for schools seeking initial accreditation or institutions that have experienced significant change.

Primary emphasis

Building capacity, evaluating current practice and establishing a strong foundation for future school improvement.

EBDSelf-Study Protocol

Excellence by Design

A self-study protocol primarily used by schools seeking reaccreditation and ready to focus accreditation work around strategic improvement goals.

Primary emphasis

Using accreditation as a vehicle for strategic planning, measurable improvement and continuing organisational development.

Accreditation process

From self-study to continuous school improvement

Middle States accreditation combines internal evaluation, stakeholder engagement and professional external peer review.

Step 01

Initial Contact & Readiness

The school begins discussions with MSA-CESS and considers its readiness, accreditation goals and the most appropriate pathway or protocol.

Step 02

Choose a Self-Study Protocol

Schools work with MSA-CESS to identify the self-study protocol most appropriate to their context, stage of development and accreditation history.

Step 03

Comprehensive Self-Study

The school evaluates itself against the relevant Standards for Accreditation and gathers evidence demonstrating educational quality and organisational effectiveness.

Step 04

Stakeholder Engagement

School leaders, teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders contribute perspectives and evidence to the self-study and improvement process.

Step 05

Peer Review

A professional peer-review team evaluates the school's self-study, evidence and practices and provides an external perspective on institutional quality.

Step 06

Accreditation Decision

The peer-review team's findings and recommendation are considered through the MSA-CESS accreditation decision process.

Step 07

Continuous Improvement

Accredited schools remain committed to ongoing improvement and continue planning, monitoring and development throughout the accreditation term.

Accreditation philosophy

Professional accountability through improvement

Continuous Improvement

Accreditation is treated as an ongoing improvement process rather than a one-time event.

Peer Review

Professional educators from accredited member schools contribute external perspective and validation.

Stakeholder Participation

School leaders, teachers, parents and students contribute to the self-study and future direction of the school.

Evidence-Based Planning

Schools use evidence, standards and measurable priorities to guide improvement and institutional development.

Professional application

Connect accreditation with rigorous school self-evaluation

MSA-CESS accreditation aligns closely with structured self-evaluation because schools are expected to assess standards, engage stakeholders, identify improvement priorities and demonstrate continuing progress.

Schools can maintain a stronger evidence base when quality assurance is embedded throughout the year rather than assembled only during formal reaccreditation.

Understand MSA-CESS accreditation standards

Select an appropriate self-study protocol

Strengthen whole-school self-evaluation

Organise evidence against five accreditation standards

Engage stakeholders in quality review

Prepare for professional peer review

Develop measurable school-improvement priorities

Maintain continuous improvement during accreditation

International comparison

MSA-CESS, Cognia, ACS WASC and NEASC use distinct accreditation models

All four connect accreditation with improvement, yet their standards, self-study protocols and external review methods differ.
