Understanding BSO
A recognised quality-assurance route for British schools overseas
The British Schools Overseas scheme enables eligible overseas schools to demonstrate through external inspection that they meet the standards required for BSO accreditation.
The standards are designed to be comparable with requirements applying to independent schools in England and, where relevant, national minimum standards for boarding schools.
Accreditation is not permanent. Schools are expected to continue meeting the standards and undergo subsequent approved inspection within the required accreditation cycle.

Accreditation pathway
From school preparation to continuing accreditation
BSO accreditation combines internal preparation with independent external inspection and continuing quality assurance.
Step 01
Review the BSO Standards
School leaders first understand the Department for Education standards that an accredited British school overseas must meet.
Step 02
Complete School Preparation
The school reviews its policies, educational provision, safeguarding arrangements, governance, evidence and operational compliance.
Step 03
Arrange an Inspection
The school arranges an inspection through an inspectorate approved by the UK Department for Education.
Step 04
External Inspection
Inspectors evaluate the school against the British Schools Overseas standards and gather evidence to determine whether the standards are met.
Step 05
Inspection Report
The inspection findings are documented and, for accredited schools, inspection information is made available through official government records.
Step 06
Maintain Accreditation
Accredited schools must continue to meet the standards and undergo another approved inspection within the required accreditation cycle.
